"In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.
Among these are:
The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;
The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
The right of every family to a decent home;
The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
The right to a good education.
All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being"
This quote states that everyone in the Untied States of America should have certain economic rights. That in orders to have security, human happiness and well-being these rights must be given to all people. Roosevelt stated that if all people in the nation had these rights then it would bring in a new prosperity in the United States of America. The rights that he spoke of were, the right to a good education, healthcare, a decent home, adequate food, clothes and recreation, protection from monopolies, and protection from old age, sickennes and, unemployment.
The reason why I picked this quote was because this is very relatable to what going on currently in the United States. There are a lot of elderly who need healthcare in this country and their are many people who are unemployed Recently their have been protesting downtown with regrades to them most rich of Americans to share the wealth with the rest of is so that everyone can have decent housing, clothes and food. Even in regard to education the cost of it has gone up making it hard for people to attend college. The prices at our own Lehman College had even gone up. I believe that this problem should have been dealt with in the 1930's that maybe the same problems would not be a issue today. It ironic that if you would take this speech and not tell a person what time it was, one would think it was recent. It is also said that the same problems are still occureing today. Unfortunately, American is not the place of new prosperity, human happiness and well-being.
